Emerald Point N.A.S. was CBS’s short-lived stab at a prime-time military soap opera. William Smith appeared in six episodes as the mysterious and somewhat sinister Colonel Shell.  He was hired by Harlan Adams (played by Patrick O’Neal who was replaced by Robert  Vaughn) to prove Maggie Farrell’s (Maud Adams)  MIA husband was dead.  At the time the show was canceled, it appeared that there were additional plot lines for Bill’s character in the works.

When Harlan Adams hired Colonel Shell he was played by Patrick O'Neal who could at least look Bill in the eye and give the appearance of being able to "handle" him..

The dynamics changed when, about the time Shell's dangerous side came out, the much shorter Robert Vaughn replaced O'Neal.  Vaughn no longer had the edge he had in Man from UNCLE and just didn't look up to facing down Colonel Shell or successfully wooing Maud Adams.
